Car Myths You Should Stop Believing!

Car Myths You Should Stop Believing

There are plenty of myths floating around about cars, and many people still believe them! Some of these myths could even be costing you money or leading you to make the wrong decisions when buying or maintaining a car. At REO Car Sales, we’re here to set the record straight!

Here are five of the biggest car myths you should stop believing.

1️⃣ Red Cars Cost More to Insure

The Myth: Red cars have higher insurance premiums because they’re seen as sporty and attract more speeding tickets.

The Truth: The colour of your car does not affect your insurance price. Insurers look at things like the make, model, engine size, value, and your driving history, not the paint job.

So if you love red cars—go for it!

2️⃣ Premium Fuel Makes Your Car Faster

The Myth: Using premium fuel (like Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate) will make any car perform better.

The Truth: Unless your car specifically requires super unleaded or premium diesel, you’re just wasting money. High-octane fuel is designed for performance engines, not regular cars.

Check your owner’s manual—if it says ‘regular unleaded’, then stick to it!

3️⃣ You Must Warm Up Your Car Before Driving in Cold Weather

The Myth: Letting your car idle for a few minutes on a cold morning helps the engine warm up properly.

The Truth: Modern cars don’t need to warm up like older models did. Idling just wastes fuel. The best way to warm up your car is to drive it gently for the first few minutes.

Turn it on, de-ice if needed, and drive off—just take it easy at first!

4️⃣ You Must Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

The Myth: Your car’s oil needs changing every 3,000 miles, or you’ll ruin your engine.

The Truth: Most modern cars can go 7,500–10,000 miles before needing an oil change. It depends on your car and oil type.

Check your owner’s manual or service book for the recommended interval.

5️⃣ Bigger Cars Are Always Safer

The Myth: The bigger the car, the safer it is in an accident.

The Truth: While bigger cars can offer better protection, modern safety features (like automatic braking, lane assist, and airbags) matter more than size. A well-rated small car can be safer than an older large one.

Always check safety ratings before buying—not just size!
